“Thank You For The Music” – ABBA

I’m nothing special, in fact I’m a bit of a bore
If I tell a joke, you’ve probably heard it before
But I have a talent, a wonderful thing
’cause everyone listens when I start to sing
I’m so grateful and proud
All I want is to sing it out loud

So I say
Thank you for the music, the songs I’m singing
Thanks for all the joy they’re bringing
Who can live without it, I ask in all honesty
What would life be?
Without a song or a dance what are we?
So I say thank you for the music
For giving it to me

Mother says I was a dancer before I could walk
She says I began to sing long before I could talk
And I’ve often wondered, how did it all start?
Who found out that nothing can capture a heart
Like a melody can?
Well, whoever it was, I’m a fan

So I say
Thank you for the music, the songs I’m singing
Thanks for all the joy they’re bringing
Who can live without it, I ask in all honesty
What would life be?
Without a song or a dance what are we?
So I say thank you for the music
For giving it to me

I’ve been so lucky, I am the girl with golden hair
I wanna sing it out to everybody
What a joy, what a life, what a chance!

So I say
Thank you for the music, the songs I’m singing
Thanks for all the joy they’re bringing
Who can live without it, I ask in all honesty
What would life be?
Without a song or a dance what are we?
So I say thank you for the music
For giving it to me.

A lot of you might not have voiced your impressions out loud but I am sure that most of you must be wondering why the majority of my blogs concern the hidden meanings that are found in the lyrics of famous songs that have come down to us over the decades. I’m equally certain that many of you are undoubtedly asking yourselves why this author is so set upon her journey to use music as her fundamental source of great inspiration, when many of you might not like to listen to music at all! The answer, my dear friends, is simply this – this author cannot imagine a single day of her life going by, without music to liven it up – MUSIC IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE MY GREATEST LOVE AND PASSION!

Let me express why so, in the easiest way possible – Music is celestial; it transcends all earthly problems, in the essence of its simplicity and beauty and dwells exclusively in the  Heavenly Mansions of the Gods. Music is one of God’s Greatest Gifts To Mankind – it has the infinite capacity to soothe, calm, relax and in so doing, it succeeds like nothing else in inducing a feeling of peace, tranquility, goodwill, brotherhood and a feeling of general well-being in its listener for himself/herself and his/her audience who find themselves in the immediate vicinity of the strains of music. It is all about Unleashing your Soul for a brief amount of time and allowing your Spirit to roam freely and joyfully. It is about expressing Freedom in its truest essence. Music is a Halo of Warmth, Goodness and Benevolence that fills the heart of any mortal, however hard-hearted and unyielding they might be, with unparalleled joy and love. You honestly don’t need to be addicted to alcohol or drugs to get your “highs” of ecstasy – music is one of the greatest stress-busters known to humanity; it is of immense significance in our contemporary world that is filled with so much stress, anxiety, worries, selfishness, callousness, indifference, hatred, cruelty, crime and evil of every conceivable kind. It is more precious than gold or any other precious gem – it is akin to the Black Gold of Oil that is discovered miraculously in the barren, burning sands of the desert. Music has been around since eons gone by, yet it is a matter of shame and great disappointment that so few people really appreciate its true value. Music is God’s greatest and most eloquent expression of what can only be described as His, “Ode To Joy” to humanity – it is simply a way of expressing Joy to the World, in a way that is unparalleled in its beauty.

Ode to Joy” (German: “Ode an die Freude”) is an ode written in 1785 by the German poet, playwright and historian Friedrich Schiller, enthusiastically celebrating the brotherhood and unity of all mankind. This ode is best known for its musical setting by Ludwig van Beethoven in the final movement of his Ninth Symphony (completed in 1824), a choral symphony for orchestra, four solo voices and choir.

Many of you must be under the impression that the author is suffering from a severe case of having, “gone crackers” and has “lost more than just a few of her marbles.” I am forced to state however – “Sorry to disappoint you, guys – the situation is under control; no screws are loose and all my marbles are intact and accounted for – thank you very much!”

Jokes aside, I really don’t know if many of you have understood the essence of my explanation, so do allow me to persuade you, in favor of The Love of Music, just a bit more, won’t you? You can safely take my word for it, as those coming from your author who is an experienced reviewer – one who has been publicly voted as being successful by the world’s audience on http://www.amazon.com. If you were to read my reviews on AMAZON.COM, you would get a more clear and better idea of what I’m talking about here – it will help to change your entire perceptions and perspective on Music, as a whole. PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO DO SO AND SEE HOW IT CHANGES YOUR LIFE!.

Many of you feel that you don’t like music because you find it impossible to understand the lyrics. You may not believe it but what you are stating is akin to entering a house from the back door and not from the main, front entrance. It is a case of reading a novel from the ending backwards to the front and not from the beginning till the end. Let me put the matter to you as simply and clearly, as possible. It concerns hearing the music of vocalists who have been popular artists in the 50s, 60s, 70s or vocalists and performing artists from later years. Let’s consider the vocals and music of world-renowned artists/music groups such as The Beatles, The Platters, The Seekers, Andy Williams, Engelbert Humperdinck, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Paul Anka, Pat Boone, The Ray Conniff Singers, Abba, Cliff Richard, The Carpenters, Roger Whittaker, Shirley Bassey or any other similar vocalist(s). In such cases, it will be very likely that the lyrics of their songs are very beautiful, soulful, meaningful and powerful. It is for this particular reason that you’ll find that each performing artist maintains his/her individual style of singing while he/she makes absolutely sure to be extremely articulate, expressive and comprehensible in the due course of their vocalization. Their voice carries a certain power and driving force behind it that make these singers belt out their lyrics at a slightly louder volume than the accompanying music that forms its background. It is to a very large extent, a clever trick that is performed by sound engineers in a recording studio.

Sound engineers are responsible for producing quality sound at live performance, studio recordings, television broadcasts and audio quality in motion pictures. These sound engineers record the live performance of the artist in such a way that the vocals are given a slightly higher edge than the musical accompaniment. You’ll find this fact made abundantly clear when you hear the tonal quality of the flat and soft drum beats of the accompanying, background music of that particular bygone era. Then try comparing it with the deep, resonant, pulsing and often thumping beat of the drums in contemporary genres of music like pop, rock, hard rock, acid rock, metal and to a certain extent, even in hip-hop and reggae styles of music.

Can any of you honestly state that you’ve understood every single word of the lyrics of artists who have used/use a very individualistic, novel and unique style of singing – artists such as Elvis Presley, The Bee Gees, Boney M, Freddy Mercury (of “Queen” fame), Michael Jackson, Sandra, Britney Spears, Tina Turner, Cher, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Rihanna, Pitbull, Florence + The Machine or those of countless other similar artists? Yet, I’m sure that most of you love their music and singing styles. Why so? You didn’t comprehend every word of the lyrics, did you?

Let us consider the basis and essence of music that is part of the contemporary era. Some artists use lyrics that are so vague and obscure that you’d really need to rack your brain to make any sense of it at all. This is more often that not, purposefully undertaken by the song-writer/performing vocalist because they hope you’ll get your “highs” from the powerfully pulsing, rhythmic and foot tapping music that forms the essential basis of the song, and not from the lyrics. Electronic guitars, synthesizers and electronic drums add to the enigma of the music of our times. The voice of the vocalist will be slightly suppressed, subdued, slightly echoing, blurry at the edges and at a slightly lower volume than the accompanying music. In these cases, the music and the electronic, rhythmic, resonant beats form the basis and essence of the song – not the lyrics at all. The artist is impassioned by his/her great joy of music – it gives them a tremendous “kick” that has more ecstatic value than all the addictive “upper” drugs put together. You might have wondered why the drum beats of certain songs have been given a slightly high, “treble” value and an essentially flat, lifeless quality whilst other drum beats are thumping, pulsing and accentuated because they aim to overshadow slightly the singer’s voice. In such cases, it is simply THE JOY OF MUSIC FOR MUSIC’S SAKE. THE LYRICS WERE NEVER MEANT TO BE OF ANY MONUMENTAL SIGNIFICANCE OR MEANING AT ALL IN THE TRACK; THEY ARE USED MORE BY THE VOCALIST FOR KEEPING HIS/HER VOICE IN SYNC WITH THE PULSING, ENTICING AND RHYTHMIC ELECTRONIC BEATS OF THE SONG.

If you are going to get so tense, anxious, roiled and agitated about the fact that you are UNABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE WORDING of certain types of music, you will never appreciate music, for the genuine love and joy of it. I love listening to French, German, Russian and Japanese music fairly frequently – to name just a few genres of music in different and often unknown languages – though I do know French and German. What has your understanding (or not) got anything to do with it? It’s for the music itself that you ought to listen to it! When you listen to music, you need to let your whole body relax and go limp. The music should flow over your senses so that they become more acute and with a heightened sensitivity, especially to the audio aspect of it. Music can either soothe and calm you or it can enliven your entire being with vitality and energy – depending on the type of music, in question.

Many of you must be thinking that why do we need to hear this litany of technical details when we don’t like or enjoy music at all? Why make such a lot of noise and ‘hullabaloo?’

The fact of the matter is that you’ve never been exposed to the RIGHT KIND of music, at just the RIGHT VOLUME, with a BALANCED ADJUSTMENT OF THE BASS AND TREBLE COMPONENTS. YOU MIGHT BE EQUALLY TEMPTED TO STATE THAT YOU DON’T REALLY CARE ABOUT THE SOUND OR TONAL QUALITY OF THE MUSIC OR ABOUT WHICH STEREO SYSTEM IS USED TO PLAY THE SAID MUSIC. I’m sorry to state that you are SO WRONG that it is not even funny! Try hearing music on high-pitched, harsh and hollow-sounding speakers and then immediately, in the next instant, hear the same track on a SUPERIOR, HIGH-QUALITY BLUE RAY OR CD PLAYER  – on a POWERFUL STEREO OR HOME THEATER SYSTEM THAT HAS A HIGH-POWERED, SUPERIOR AMPLIFIER AND THE VERY BEST PAIR OF SPEAKERS AVAILABLE TODAY IN THE MARKET – SPEAKERS THAT BELT OUT A MELLOW – YET DEEP AND RESONANT, PLEASING SOUND. SPEAKERS THAT CAN BE BELTED OUT SO LOUD THAT THE VOCALS AND SOUND REMAIN SULTRY, DEEP AND RICH WITHOUT CRACKING AT ALL.

I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT IT WILL BLOW YOUR HAIR AWAY – IT WILL FILL YOUR ENTIRE BEING WITH SUCH IMMENSE WARMTH AND A FEELING OF SUCH INTENSE GOODNESS THAT IT WILL SET YOUR SOUL FREE, FOR THAT BRIEF MOMENT IN TIME, SO THAT IT CAN NOT ONLY FLY – BUT SOAR!

I suppose that a lot of you don’t like music because you’ve been exposed to extremely loud and blaring music which is nothing short of an insult to music itself and a painful assault to one’s ear-drums – one capable of causing great damage and hearing loss. I am talking particularly of the music played by  a DJ at a discotheque with incessantly revolving strobe disco lights; or whilst on the  dance floor of a night-club or the thumping music of rave parties and even the blaring live band of parties given on the occasion of a couple’s wedding. If you hear such music from indoors, from the confines of the four walls of your home – the faint strains of which are coming from an outdoor party at a local gymkhana/club nearby – you’ll only be hearing some vague sounds that though remain very loud, tend to be blurred and muffled because the thumping drum-beat acts like a very hard punch to one’s chest. How can you possibly be expected to like such music and that too in such unfriendly circumstances and surroundings? It is not so surprising then that you don’t like it! TRY TO CHANGE THE KIND OF MUSIC THAT YOU HEAR AND THE WAY IN WHICH YOU OUGHT TO LISTEN TO IT AND SEE HOW THE ECSTATIC JOY THAT IT BRINGS TRANSFORMS YOUR LIFE – THAT’S MY FERVENT ADVICE TO YOU.

MICHAEL FLATLEY is an Irish-American dancer, choreographer, actor, musician and occasional television presenter. He became internationally known for Irish dance shows like “Riverdance”, “Lord of the Dance”, “Feet of Flames” and “Celtic Tiger.” Flatley and his highly proficient TAP-DANCING troope  make ‘amazing music’ by tapping the wooden floor with their feet; by clacking their feet together, rapidly and rhythmically. The sound is entrancing, mesmeric and ethereal – something truly from out of this world! That’s Music too – but I guess that a lot of you don’t think of it in that way.

Can you imagine Life without any Music at all? You never thought of it, in so many words, did you?

Millions of people, from all around the world, use their week ends and vacation time to relax in the calm, tranquil and reclusive surroundings of the country-side, hill stations, holiday and sea-side resorts. Why do think that they spend so much time, energy and money in doing so? Simply because they want to experience the lost pleasures of waking up each morning to the trilling and chirping of birds and other calls of Nature that form a part of Music too – even though you might not think so.

Famous composers and musicians have been known to take inspiration for their symphonies and  other musical works after hearing the rhythmic clacking of the iron wheels of a train, hitting the rail track like a syncopated beat, when it is traveling at a high speed. People have been known to use metallic dustbins to create a distinctive, hard – yet hollow – drum beat, especially when it is struck by a fabricated drum stick that is heavily wrapped at one end with cloth, to make the beat more resonant. Can you imagine entering any restaurant, theater, concert hall, lounge or hotel lobby without hearing soft, soothing background music? Can you imagine seeing any movie without the vibrancy of a dramatic soundtrack? I can’t. I don’t think that you can either!

Music has enamored the lives of millions of people, across the centuries, starting from prehistoric times, till the modern ages. It has fascinated tons of people, since eons gone by and has captured their imaginations, like nothing else and has never ceased doing so.

It is thus apt to say that “a man without love and the joy of music, has essentially not lived or loved!”
